Dr. Sagar Sengupta is currently the Director of BRIC National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (BRIC NIBMG) and Director (Additional Charge) of BRIC National Brain Research Centre (BRIC NBRC).
Dr. Sagar Sengupta’s research has contributed to understand the fundamental mechanisms of genome integrity in nucleus and mitochondria. Dr. Sengupta has used molecular, imaging, cellular and in vivo mice methods to delineate how signaling pathways crosstalk with each other during the process of cancer initiation, progression and chemoresistance with emphasis on cancer predisposed syndromes and colorectal and breast carcinoma. In mitochondria Dr. Sengupta’s lab has made contributions in the understanding of mitochondrial genome integrity during mitochondrial replication. He has further contributed to trying to revert mitochondrial disorders which make up 0.05% of the general population. Dr. Sengupta has been passionate about taking his fundamental towards application and has consistently tried to take the outcome of his studies to preclinical stage. Work in his lab led to discoveries with high impact publications, patents and now an ongoing clinical trial with ACTREC. He is a Fellow of Indian National Science Academy (INSA), Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc) and The National Academy of Sciences, India (India). Dr. Sengupta is also an elected member of Guha Research Conference (GRC), a recipient of the Professor Vishwa Nath Memorial Award Lecture, INSA (2021), Lalji Singh Memorial Award Lecture (2023) and Indian Association of Cancer Research Oration (2026). Dr. Sengupta is serving as a JC Bose Fellow since 2018 till date.
